The reason why society is losing control over what it wants or what is tampering with our rudder can be checked by asking ourselves the above questions. This puts the question on the table whether we are organised in the correct way to have sufficient freedom, cooperation and trust and being able also in this way to do better for the general interest. For that, we need to check how politics are organised today. We compare two ways to organize ourselves.

vertical organisation
horizontal organisation

Individuals get a lot of power in vertical organisations.

A (more) horizontal organisation improves interaction and happiness

People mistakenly think a vertical structure is more efficient because of the clear single authority, but individuals get a lot of power in a vertical structure and in practice, you can not underestimate how fast this power gets abused and makes people communicate less, lose creativity and ultimately makes them less happy.

In a (more) horizontal organisation, power is divided among many people and it avoids abuse of power by individuals. Moreover, it boosts creativity and knowledge sharing across different domains. Through a common vision and good communication methods, a horizontal structure does not need to be chaotic, but can be very structured.

Politics Today

Wanted Politics

Our representative democracy gives a lot of power to the heads of political parties as they are vertically structured, trying to assemble their power. In the parliament, politicians vote according to their party, which puts the power with the head of parties trying to win votes in the media and creating short-term compromises. Result: We live in a particracy.

Politics is an interaction between a lot of different facets of our lives and as such needs this creativity and knowledge sharing to be relevant. Bringing in horizontal structures allows everyone to think about long-term solutions. This means changing the system such that we think bottom-up in function of the people. Politics should become the people.

However, making our society more horizontal is a difficult task...

We have several solutions for this, but none of this work is finished and keeps evolving. You might even be able to add your own solutions. In order to keep doing the good work in a horizontal way, we base ourself on the Basic Text, in which these 7 basic values are worked out:

A critical spirit and an evidence-based policy
Civil rights
Direct democracy and self-determination right
The right to privacy for citizens
The duty of transparency for authorities
Information freedom and freedom of expression
The right to a decent life
The share-culture
Sustainability as a priority

Below we work out some solutions where we are most sure about transparency, a free internet and managing the city as a common. Others remain more vague and need more discussion.
